Digging into the generative AI platform race, and sharing insights and strategies on how AI-native startups can get big--stay big--and win amidst the AI hype cycle.
Update: Not sure of you saw this post by The Information (link below), but Jasper has done some recent layoffs. Seemingly in the face of lots of competition, they don't have deep enough moats just yet.
Thanks so much, Peter. That means a ton coming from you. Very valid question. I know, anecdotally, from some of my marketing friends who use it that they still do, and that the FB community raves about it (but also, by joining the community, you’re likely in the cohort of people who are using it more heavily anyway). But more broadly, hard to say what the overall retention numbers are. Would be interesting to know the monthly vs paid plan distribution. What’s your gut feeling re. their retention?
Your writing style is incredibly captivating - you had my attention throughout this extensive piece. :) This was actually the first post of yours that I read, and I'm already a fan! :D
Wow...that is so kind of you to say. Thank you so much, Ritu, and I'm pumped to have you part of the community. Hopefully it just keeps getting better :)
What a nice message to wake up to for the 1st of the month! Truly, me pleasure. And thank you so much for making your way through my pieces...I know they're not short 🫠
Haha // yeah I almost did a word count on this one might be your longest! I really appreciate the depth of your research on all of these, but also how digestable the content is. You have a great POV and commentary that helps your reader grasp these complex products/markets/etc. // anyhow dude amazed you can crank these out weekly // I struggled just to get out an article last night about sexy lamps. Keep up the awesome work // really appreciate the blog!
It was definitely the longest at one point, then did some culling...if you can believe it. I think OpenAI might take the cake, over 12K words. This was a little under 10k.
And truly, that means so much. Thank you for the feedback and kind words. Super motivating.
Thanks Jaryd for an insightful analysis. You did touch on the point that enterprise-like customers are concerned over how their data are collected and used against their benefits. ("That’s a challenge all application-layer startups will have to deal with. And the more enterprise-like the customer, the more concerns they’ll have about plopping their team and data into a startup that could be sending their data to OpenAI (thus, Microsoft).")
I wonder how Jasper has been addressing those concerns to improve their conversion, retention?
This is a great post - I think my big question is whether they actually have strong retention or are growing a leaky bucket.

Conteúdo incrível e surpreendente!
Keep up the good work Jaryd ! I always look forward to reading your posts. This is gold.
Thanks, Abhishek! Really appreciate you reading them. Not for the feint-hearted. Same amount of time as watching a 40m episode 😂
