...another great read dude...thanks...

...as of now I can't help escape the thought that generative A.I. for content is akin to a tchotchke manufacturer...unlimited plastic nothings inevitably landing in the basement of some hoarder house or a landfill in the middle of the desert...the optimistic me thinks this means a great opportunity for those who provide unique human generated arts to thrive...but the pessimistic me sees already all the ways in which less than quality content is replacing things that at least tried...i've been laughing all week at the results of runway.ml's gen-2 text to video...sure the results will get better but even if they encroach quality for the variety of stock offerings on a service such as pond 5 will it ever eclipse it...and if so at what cost?...it took me a solid hour of prompts to get one ok looking four second clip that had an awful frame rate and would be usable primarily just to show someone a generative A.I. demo...i can't help but think that this A.I. surge is like many other surges in the tech space past where we seek to solve problems where there are none...what was really wrong with paying artists to create art when you needed it?...do we really want to live in a humanless creation vacuum?...the hilarity of the web in 5 years with A.I. articles built on the results of other A.I. articles being scrubbed by A.I. bot readers in the hope of generating A.I. ad dollars is truly dystopian...give me my can of spam soda already!...

Howdy! Thanks so much for dropping in down here again with such a thoughtful comment.

Love the analogy there, and 100% agree we have a bunch of AI-enabled hammers running around looking to solve non-existent problems. There will be many failures and consolidations because of that.

Re. the video stuff, I haven't actually tried the new runway version, but I mean, Marvel has already used gen AI to create the opening sequence for their new show. There was push back, of course, from creatives. Like Twitter did with layoffs, this move by Marvel will likely open the flood gates for what's "acceptable".

And ultimately, as more stuff in our lives is AI made, we're just going to value human creators we trust more and more. Real art. Real music. Real video. Real writing. Specialty, with premium pricing. Nooks of the interent where real people complain with each other about all the AI stuff everywhere else. On the plus side, we're in the right place and doing the right thing. 😎

Loved that piece. You've been killing it man. Honestly one of my favorite newsletters. Just realized I was not a subscriber subscriber -- just changed that.

And please don’t feel obligated or bad about not being a subscriber subscriber (we may need to trademark that term!). I’m just doing it for fun & to try to figure out how to use our product! πŸ˜…

πŸ˜‚ go for it! And zero obligation, such good content. Also, I really like the model of not actually pay gating stuff, but still having a paid plan. I imagine having paywalls does drive more conversions (me as a case in point--I just didn’t think about it) but I think the β€œpay to support my work if you think it’s worth it” is a great approach.
